Other Events

During the last years the Finlandia Society of Calgary (FSoC) has organized dozens of different events. The following is a collection of the most popular once-a-year events. In addition to the ones listed here, the FSoC also organizes some yearly events such as Library Evenings in co-operation with the other Scandinavian Societies as well as movie nights. Please see the  Events Calendar for a list of forthcoming events.

Casino Nights: The FSoC receives casino funding from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission. Two-day casinos are held once every 18 months at Casino Calgary at the crossing of 16th Avenue and Barlow Trail N.E.. Volunteers from the members of the FSoC (25 for each day) are needed to help with the casino. In each day there will be a day and an evening shift. Volunteers working on two days need to fill the same shift on both days. If you would like to help, please contact any of the board members at least 2-3 months before the next Casino Day to fill out the volunteer application form. In addition to the awesome experience, volunteers working at the Casino Days will receive free meals!
Skiing Trips:
Cross country skiing trips are held at Kananaskis Country during February and March. We usually meet at the Visitor's Information Centre at the Peter Lougheed Centre.
Concerts: Spring and Fall Concerts. Details see Events Calendar.
Mother's Day:
The traditional Mother's Day Party is held yearly at different homes. It is a special ladies' informal evening to socialize with each other. All women are welcome!
Mid Summer Celebration:
The traditional Mid Summer Fest though without the real Finnish mid summer sun. Socializing, sports, games, kokko, and lettus.  A great fun for everyone!
Christmas Bazaar:
Donation based Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar. Lots of beautiful and interesting items and goodies for sale! The profit from the sales goes to the FSoC.
Christmas Dinner:
What would a Christmas be without the Finnish food and music? Ham, casseroles, salmon, pulla, glögi and other Finnish dishes and sweets. Musical performances, singing, poems and Christmas Gospel create the real spirit of Christmas. A great success evening with an usual attendance of 120+ members!
